Plot summary
Koi Mil Gaya follows the story of Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan), a young man who suffers from mental retardation due to a car accident that killed his father Sanjay (Rakesh Roshan) and injured his mother Sonia (Rekha). Sanjay was a scientist who devised a computer that could communicate with aliens. One night, he saw an alien spaceship in the sky and tried to contact it, but was met with disbelief and ridicule by his colleagues. On his way back home, he crashed his car while avoiding another spaceship that landed nearby.
Years later, Rohit lives with his mother in a small town and is bullied by his peers for his low intelligence. He befriends Nisha (Preity Zinta), a compassionate girl who falls in love with him. One day, Rohit and Nisha find Sanjay's computer in his shed and follow the instructions to send a signal to outer space. That night, their town is visited by an alien spaceship that leaves behind one of its occupants. Rohit and Nisha discover the alien, whom they name Jadoo (Magic), and hide him from the authorities. Jadoo has telekinetic powers that he uses to help Rohit in various ways, such as improving his physical and mental abilities, healing his wounds, and granting him superhuman strength and speed.
Rohit becomes popular among his friends and enemies, and also attracts the attention of Raj Saxena (Rajat Bedi), Nisha's wealthy suitor who is jealous of Rohit. Raj informs Inspector Khurshid Khan (Mukesh Rishi) about Jadoo, who leads a raid on Rohit's house to capture him. However, Jadoo escapes with Rohit's help and returns to his spaceship, which arrives to take him back home. Rohit bids farewell to Jadoo, who restores his original state before leaving. Rohit is heartbroken, but Nisha assures him that she loves him for who he is.

Koi Mil Gaya was inspired by Rakesh Roshan's desire to make a different type of film after his successful romantic film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), which also starred Hrithik Roshan. He wanted to make a film that would appeal to children and parents alike, and also showcase Hrithik's versatility as an actor. He wrote the story of Koi Mil Gaya with Sachin Bhowmick, Honey Irani, and Robin Bhatt.
The film was shot from November 2001 to March 2003 in Canada, India, and New Zealand. The film required extensive visual effects to create the alien character Jadoo, who was designed by James Colmer and Craig Mumma from an American company called CFX. The film also used motion capture technology to capture Hrithik's movements for Jadoo. The film's budget was estimated to be between 250 million (US$3.1 million) to 350 million (US$4.4 million).
